Wildlife and Landscape
The variety of habitats around Lauriston Farm and the nearby coastline offers not only an opportunity to observe birds, plants and other wildlife, but also to enjoy the wider landscape of the Firth of Forth.
From the fields and hedgerows of the agroecology project to the shoreline at Granton, the area provides ever-changing views across the estuary. On clear days the Queensferry Crossing and the Forth Bridge can be seen in the distance, with wide views across the water towards Fife and the islands of the inner Forth such as Inchmickery and Oxcars.
The coastline and surrounding waters form part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), recognised for the importance of its habitats and wildlife. Alongside the birds and other wildlife recorded on this site, the landscape itself provides memorable scenes — from dramatic skies and sunsets over the Forth to changing light across the sea and islands.
A walk along the promenade westwards leads to the historic village of Cramond and the tidal causeway to Cramond Island. Following the path inland along the River Almond offers quieter waters where birds such as herons, dippers and kingfishers may be seen — and with a little luck, perhaps even an otter.
The galleries below show some of these landscapes and habitats as they appear throughout the year. Click on an image for a bigger image.
