Carrion Crow (Corvus corone)

The Carrion Crow is a familiar and highly adaptable bird found across farmland, gardens and coastal areas. Around the fields and shoreline of the Granton and Lauriston area they are often seen in small groups, patrolling the shore or feeding in nearby fields.

Highly intelligent and opportunistic, carrion crows will eat almost anything, including insects, grain, small animals, carrion and shellfish. Along rocky beaches they can sometimes be seen collecting shellfish and flying up before dropping them onto the rocks below. The impact breaks the shells open, allowing the birds to eat the contents.

This behaviour demonstrates the crow’s remarkable problem-solving ability and is a good example of how wildlife adapts to coastal environments.

Local observation

Small groups are regularly seen along the Granton shoreline, especially at low tide, where they search the rocky beach for shellfish and other food. Birds may be observed carrying shellfish into the air and dropping them onto the rocks to break them open.
